  3.                  HOW TO SPEED UP YOUR SYSTEM

  5. As you know, the fastest computers in the market today are
  6. the 80386 and the 80486 based machines.  The techniques
  7. presented here are good for both the old models and the new
  8. ones, but they work better with old PC's and XT's.
  9.  
  10. They may seem trivial to experienced users, but it is amazing
  11. to know that many computer users do not use these simple
  12. procedures even though they are aware of them.  By using some
  13. or all the techniques described in this section, you can
  14. considerably improve the processing speed of your system and
  15. reduce the time it takes to complete your projects.
  16.  
  17. Every computer owner wishes to have a faster system, but not
  18. everyone can afford it.  Fortunately, the clock speed is
  19. merely one of the many factors that affect the overall
  20. performance of computer systems.
  21.  
  22. Before you upgrade your system, ask yourself some of these
  23. questions:
  24.  
  25.      - How many hours am I using my computer every day?
  26.  
  27.      - Is there a way to get the job done in less time than
  28.        what it is taking me now?
  29.  
  30.      - What is the cost involved in changing my system? -Does
  31.        the amount of time I save justify the cost
  32.        involved?
  33.  
  34. If the answers to these questions indicate that you neeed to
  35. upgrade to a faster system, then go ahead.  Otherwise, stick
  36. to what you have and try to improve the performance of your
  37. system using the available software techniques.

  39. In addition to the techniques you will see in this section,
  40. there are a few more that will speed up your computing.  We
  41. found three that are especially helpful.

  43.      1) If you do a lot of number crunching, you may consider
  44.         buying a math coprocessor.  Math coprocessors are
  45.         available at several speeds for all types of micro-
  46.         processors.  Prices vary.  So, call several mail
  47.         order companies for the best value.

  49.     2)  You may be able to use commercial programs (such as
  50.         Word Perfect and Lotus 123) much faster using
  51.         templates which help you locate important keys
  52.         without having to go back to the user's manual for
  53.         reference. You can get all kinds of templates from
  54.         computer stores or from the FuncKey Enterprises.

  58.     3)  Your typing speed does make a difference in
  59.         completing computer-related tasks.  Surely, it is
  60.         more likely for you to finish a ten-page document in
  61.         a shorter time if your typing speed were sixty word
  62.         per minute than if it were thirty words per minute.
  63.         If you feel that you need to improve your typing
  64.         skills, I suggest that you go to your local computer
  65.         store and buy a typing tutor or get a shareware
  66.         version of PC-Fastype from one of the distributors
  67.         listed in the software section of this disk.
